The Horror Genre

    The horror genre in movies is characterized from its intent to evoke fear, suspense, and dread in the audience. It often features elements like supernatural creatures, psychological tension, gore, and jump scares. Horror films aim to disturb, keeping viewers on edge and delivering spine-chilling experiences.

Content

    Horror films utilize unique perspectives to confuse and disturb their audience. The audience is often uneasy and on edge due to the lighting, which is typically dim, underexposed, and filled with shadows.

Production techniques

    The mise-en-scene in horror tends to be dark, rural deserted locations, places that are abandoned and isolated. There are often elements of fear, shock and a buildup of 'wicked' or 'evil' characters.

How Horror is marketed

    Highlighting the villain as the main focus of the movie's marketing plan is essential to the horror film industry. This can be done by giving the villain a preview in trailers, posters, or social media posts.The movies can also include jumpscare and a dark mise-en-scene to lure the audience.

Film sample #1- Halloween

    The film includes the infamous Michael Myers as he kills people in a town. The movies involve creepy music, suspense, and jumpscares. There is also Blood and gore to make it part of the horror genre.

    The Conjuring- The film includes a haunted house that a family moves into and the ghost is trying to possess the mother. This film has many jumpscares and creepy sound effects to make the film disturbing.

Sound Blog Post

 Description:

The main goal of the assignment was to have students be able to tell a story by using sound effects. No video is allowed. The film had to be between 1-2 minutes long and had to realistically happen in 1-2 minutes. An outline needed to be made showing every single scene and sound that you will use. Using dialogue was optional with maximum 7 words. 4 sounds must be creating using foley sounds and they had to be recorded showing what objects were used to make the sound. Pictures of the editing timeline to make the film had to be taken aswell. There were examples of sound effect databases websites provided.

Project:

The first idea I had for the project was to create the scene that was going to happen. My idea was to create a scene where a person was at the beach enjoying their time, and it starts to thunder and rain, and the character leaves and gets in their car. The website I used to get most of the sound effects was from pixabay.

For the first scene, I included a combination of waves crashing, seagulls, radio music, children playing, splashes, soda drinking, wind building, and light/heavy rain sound effects to create the atmosphere at the beach. The waves, music, and wind building volume of the sound was changed to blend into the environment.

For the next scene of heading to the car, sounds effects for the backpack such as the zipper opening and closing, aswell as walking and running in the sand. The running in the sand was blending in with running on the concrete to make it more realistic.

For the final scene that takes place in the car, it consists of sounds of car keys, rain hitting the car roof, and opening/closing the car door. After getting into the car, the sound of starting the engine, putting on the seatbelt, and turning on the a/c was used to create the effect of being inside of a car.

Blog Posting Activity

Description:    

    The main objective of the assignment is to create a movie that contains a total of 15 different shots and some angles. These shots are designed to represent the main idea of the story as well as an object as the main character as they progress throughout the plot. The shots has to be shown in a powerpoint with each slide showing a different shot and explaining what kind of shot it is and how it progresses the story.

Summary:

    First, I found a suitable object to take 15 pictures of for the film, and the one I chose was an origami bird. I then thought of different ideas and plots i could use for the movie so I can take the shots and different angles. The plot I went with was a piece of paper being crafted and as it becomes a bird, it starts flying and leaving the room. The first shot of the film is an establishing shot of the entire classroom to set up the scene that is going to happen and the audience can become aware that the movie is taking place in a classroom. Shots #2,3, and 4 are all shots showing the bird being made from paper. It includes close-up shots, long shots, and long shots with a high angle. The next shot shows a long shot of the newly made origami bird so the viewers can see a full view of the object. Shots #6, 7, 8, and 9 show a long shot with a low angle of the bird, a medium shot, a close-up, and an extreme close up. Shot #10 is the first POV shot, the audience knows that this is a POV shot because the previous shots show the transition from a medium shot of the origami bird to an extreme close-up to a POV shot. Shots #11, 12, and 13 show more POV shots of the bird. These shots are shown to demonstrate the bird flying in the air as he progresses through the story. Shot 11 shows the bird in the air from the previous position on the desk. Shot 12 shows the bird higher in the air and turning to the side and seeing the open door. Then Shot 13 has the bird even closer to the door as it is flying to the exit to leave. Shot 14 is a medium shot of the bird in the air as it flies out of the classroom. The final shot of the movie is another angle of the bird flying out of the classroom into the hallway, showing a long shot.

Reflection:

    What I believe I did well on was showing every shot and angle that was required for the quiz and label them correctly on the powerpoint. All of my shots were clear and showed a lot of detail, especially in the close-up shots. I think i can work on the progression of the story and make it clearer to the audience. Also, I don't think my low and high angles help develop and progress the story further.
